This son was our ancestor Isaac. When he married Rebekah, she gave birth to twins.
But before they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, she received a message from God. (This message shows that God chooses people according to his own purposes; he calls people, but not according to their good or bad works.)
She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger son.”
In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau.”

I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.  I love God’s law with all my heart.  But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.  Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?  Thank God!
